The cabinet committee on infrastructure today approved the project to develop the north cargo berth-II for handling bulk cargoes at Tuticorin port on a design, build, finance, operate and transfer (DBFOT) basis for the period of 30 years.

A government press release put the estimated cost at Rs332.16 crore for a capacity of seven million tonnes per annum (MTPA). The project is expected to be completed within 24 months from the date of award of concession.

As a result of the implementation of the project, Tuticorin port shall be able to handle 7 million tonnes of bulk cargoes per annum economically with higher productivity rate per day.

The project will boost the import trade in the region with a saving in freight and ship cost to the shippers.

The mechanised facility will reduce the dwell time of bulk cargoes and the import will be faster and cheaper, according to the release.
