Centre approves nearly 700 slum improvement projects news

The ministry of housing an urban poverty alleviation has approved 422 projects under the Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme (IHSDP) and 274 projects under the basic services to the urban poor (BSUP) so far. 

The two schemes were launched by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. While the Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme aims to ease the living conditions of urban slum dwellers, the Basic Services to the Urban Poor (BSUP)  was aimed at urban slum dwellers in 63  cities that had been identified  for special attention.

Under the Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme, 422 detailed project reports from 29 states have so far been approved with a total project cost of Rs4009.90 crore with a central share commitment of Rs2,871.26 crore covering 259,200 dwelling units and basic civic amenities.  Against the approved first installment of Rs1,435.64 crore, an additional central assistance  of Rs1,259.65 crore has been released by the finance ministry.

Under the Basic Services for the Urban Poor, detailed project reports from 61 mission cities have so far been approved with total project cost of Rs.17421.11 crore (with central share of Rs.8761.03 crore) covering 7,87,111 dwelling units.  The central share committed constitutes 64.18 per cent of the 7-year allocation under the mission indicated by the Planning Commission for 2005-12.  Against the approved central share installments committed,  additional central assistance of Rs.2127.74 crore has been released as first installment (and in some cases as the second) by the ministry of finance.

The existing Valmiki Ambedkar Awas Yojana (VAMBAY) and the discontinued National Slum Development Programme (NSDP) ahave been merged in the  Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme, to bring about holistic slum development and provide a healthy and enabling urban environment by providing adequate shelter and basic infrastructure facilities to urban slum dwellers. 

The programme covers all the towns except the 63 mission towns  and cities covered under the Basic Services for the Urban Poor (BSUP) under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

The Basic Services to the Urban Poor (BSUP)  was launched by the prime minister in December 2005 with a view to ameliorate the conditions of the urban slum dwellers who are residing in dilapidated conditions in the identified 63 mission cities.  The basic objective of the scheme is to strive for holistic slum development with a healthy and enabling urban environment by providing adequate shelter and basic infrastructure facilities to the urban slum dwellers.
