Postal department plans ATMs news

Kochi: The department of posts (DoP), which now has the facility of pay-by-date telephone bills, will soon allow telephone bill payment after the due date with fine, post master general (central region) P C Baburaj said at a function to mark the National Postal Week celebrations.
DoP also plans to begin ATMs in its offices across the country. With deposits of over Rs 1,65,000 lakh crore, DoP is emerging as the biggest bank in the country, he said. Customers can use the debit card issued by the department by depositing an amount ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000. They can withdraw money from post offices across the country by using the card.

On the decision to allow telephone bill payment after the due date, Baburaj said this is aimed to facilitate the customers in Idukki district of Kerala. Bill payments for water and electricity charges have begun on an experimental basis in Haryana and it will soon be started in other states, including Kerala.

DoP officials said the e-post facility, started in 51 cities across the country, would be extended to more cities in the coming months. The department will also begin a facility whereby the users of its international speed post can track their documents and letters through DoP websites.
