Orissa approves core sector proposals worth Rs1,28,000 crore news

The Orissa government has accorded approval to projects worth Rs1.28 lakh crore in the state, in sectors including power, steel and aluminium.

The investments, approved by a high-level clearance authority headed by chief minister Naveen Patnai, included 15 high-value projects.

The projects cleared included the National Aluminium Company Ltd's (NALCO) Rs16,345.89 crore aluminium complex, Navyug Steel Ltd's Rs34,000 crore project, Astaranga Power Company's Rs11,200 crore project and RSB Metal Technology's Rs6,800 crore alumina project. Additionally, projects of NTPC, Bhusan Power, JSW, Welspun, JSL, Kalinga Energy and Arati Steel were also cleared.

Orissa's minster for steel and mines, Pradip Amat, was quoted in the media as saying that Navyug Steel, the Hyderabad-based company, has proposed a 12 million tonnes per annum steel complex that would be built in four phases at a cost of Rs34,000 crore in Astaranga. The project, which is expected to span 4,000 acres, would be assessed after the company submits a project report to the government.

Astaranga Power Company's 2600 MW thermal power project would get its water from the Devi River. Nalco's plans to set up a 0.50 million tonne per annum aluminium smelter plant and a 1260 MW captive power plant would come up in two phases. Nalco would also set up 840 MW captive plant during the first phase, and a second 420 MW plant during the second phase. Reports pegged the land requirement for Nalco's project at 275 hectares for the smelter plant and 576 hectares for the power plant.

Lanco Solar Private Ltd's proposal to establish a Rs2,800 crore integrated plant for the manufacture of solar cells, modules and crystalline silicon at Padmalayapur in Dhenkanal district was also approved.

Jindal Stainless' proposal to set up a 1000 MW independent power producer (IPP) unit, at an investment of Rs4090 crore, was not approved, with the HLCA asking the company to change the project site. Also, the decision on the 700 MW, Rs1,007crore proposed power plant of Ind Bharat Energy, the proposed 1320 mega watt Rs5,604 crore power plant proposal of Sahara India Power Corporation, and the 1100 MW Rs4,810 crore power plant proposal of Visaka Thermal were deferred.
