Industrial production up 4.8 per cent in September news

The index of industrial production has grown at 4.8 per cent in September compared with the same month last year,  according to quick estimates provided by the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO).

Cumulative growth for April-September 2008-09 stood at 4.9 per cent over the corresponding period of the previous year, aided mainly by growth in mining, manufacturing and electricity sectors.

The general index stood at 273.0, up 4.8 per cent from the level in the September 2007-08.

The growth has been aided by better performance by the mining sector, which grew at 5.7 per cent as against 4.9 per cent in September 2007, a 4.4 per cent growth in electricity generation and an 18.8 per cent growth in capital goods production.

Consumer goods sector too has shown satisfactory growth at 5.6 per cent as against a negative 0.2 per cent in September 2007.

The mining, manufacturing and electricity sectors recorded growth rates of 5.7 per cent, 4.8 per cent and 4.4 per cent during the month while cumulative growth for April-September 2008-09 stood at 3.8 per cent, 5.2 per cent and 2.5 per cent respectively.

As many as nine out of the 17 industry groups have shown positive growth during September 2008 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. The industry group 'Transport Equipment and Parts' have shown the highest growth of 16.8 per cent, followed by 16.1 per cent in 'Machinery and Equipment other than Transport Equipment' and 12.8 per cent in 'Metal Products and Parts, except Machinery and Equipment'.

On the other hand, the industry group 'Wood and Wood Products: Furniture and Fixtures' have shown a negative growth of 9.7 per cent followed by 9.3 per cent in 'Cotton Textiles' and 8.6 per cent in 'Leather and Fur Products'.

Sector-wise, basic goods industries recorded growth rate of 4.6 per cent and capital goods at 18.8 per cent while intermediate goods showed a negative growth of 3.3 per cent.

Consumer durables and consumer non-durables have recorded growth of 13.1 per cent and 2.8 per cent respectively, with the overall growth in consumer goods being 5.6 per cent.

The indices for August 2008 have been revised and those for June 2008 have undergone the second (final) revision in the light of the updated data received from the source agencies, CSO said.
