Oman stops issuing new visas to skilled workers news
28 July 2008

Mumbai: The Sultanate of Oman has stopped issuing fresh visas to skilled workers from foreign countries like those engaged in jobs like cleaning, laundry, and electronic repair among others, where enough local workers are available.

The new rule bans import of manpower in some professions, saying individuals engaged in these will not be eligible for visa clearance. However, those currently employed can renew their visa, the ministry said.

The manpower import ban will affect sectors like foreign trade, laundry, tailoring, electronic repair, garbage cleaning, textiles, mobile shops, health clubs as also workshops in aluminium, iron, wood, and related activities, the ministry said.

Under the government's 'Omanisation' drive started in 1988, the number of Omani nationals employed in the private sector has steadily been rising since the early 19990 – rising from 14.7 per cent in 1995 to 16.6 per cent in 2000.

By the end of 1999, the number of Omanis in government service exceeded the set target of 72 per cent, and in most departments reached 86 per cent.

The Omanisation campaign is meant to ensure job for each Omani citizen, while reducing dependence on expatriates.
