26 July 2008

Mumbai: At least 10 people were killed and over 35 others were injured in a series of 13 blasts that rocked Ahmedabad on Saturday, officials said.

Coming in quick succession after yesterday's serial blasts in Bangalore, thirteen to fourteen blasts went off in the evening today in the Raipur, Maninagar, Isanpur, Naroda, Bapu Nagar, Sakrej, Harkeshwar and Diamond Market areas of the city.

Initial reports suggested that 10 people have been killed and 35 others were injured. All the blasts went off within half an hour starting 6:45 pm.

The first two blasts were reported in Chakla area of Raipur and Narole Circle of Maninagar.

This was followed by another blast in Saranpur area of Raipur, followed by another in Maninagar, which, incidentally, is also the constituency of chief minister Narendra Modi.

Bapu Nagar and Diamond Market are in the Old City, reports said, the blasts have led to small fires from the splinters.

The seventh explosion took place in Sakrej, where, according to reports, a bomb went off in a CNG bus.

Another explosion occurred at a market near Sabarmati River, where, eyewitness said they saw two men, aged around 25, throwing a bag near the shops. Immediately after there was an explosion.

In Hatkeshwar, where details are sketchy, it is believed that most of the bombs may have been placed on cycles.

Police have rushed to the sites and the injured have been rushed to civil and LJ hospitals. All mobile networks have been jammed. Bomb disposal squads are out in full swing sanitizing different parts of the city.

The city has been cordoned off as it is a sensitive area and authorities don't want tensions to flare up.

Meanwhile, high alert has been sounded in Delhi, Mumbai, and other metros. Tamil Nadu has also been put on high alert after indications that the ancient Meenakashi Temple may be on target.

Maharashtra, Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh have also been put on high alert.

While the pattern of blasts in Ahmedabad was similar to those in Bangalore, the intensity has been higher than those used in yesterday's attack.

Authorities have extended a helpline on 09873603313.

In Bangalore, meanwhile, police today diffused a high-intensity bomb placed near a shopping mall in the upscale Koramangala locality. The bomb was diffused by a disposal squad that has arrived from Delhi.

Koramangalam was the site of one of Friday's blasts. A micro-chip, detonators and explosives were recovered from the site, according to the city police  commissioner.
