South-west monsoon hits Kerala coast news

Mumbai: The south-west monsoon has hit the Kerala coast heralding the onset of the rainy spell, which is crucial to farmers and the the overall health of the economy.

There were widespread rains in most parts of Kerala, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

The monsoon had reached almost up to Kozhikode in the north and conditions were favourable for its further advancement across the remaining parts of the state in the next two to three days, IMD said.

Heavy to very heavy rain were recorded in places like Kollam (19 cm), North Paravur (15 cm RPT 15 CM)), Kayamkulam (9), Kochi airport, Mavelikkara (8) each, Varkala and Harippad (7) each in the 24 hours till 0800 hours today. Rain or thundershowers are likely to occur in most places in Lakshadweep, IMD forecast said.

Isolated heavy rainfall was likely to occur in Kerala and Lakshadweep in the next two days.

Squally weather with wind speed reaching 45 to 55 kmph is likely along off Kerala coast and Lakshadweep in the next 48 hours, the IMD said in its foreast.

With the onset of monsoon in Kerala, western states expects rains to be on schedule.
