India and Australia commit to stronger scientific, technological ties news

Union minister for science and technology and earth sciences Kapil Sibal and Kim Carr, Australian minister for innovation, industry, science and research  have agreed to step up scientific cooperation between the two countries.

Taking note of the 21 ongoing projects under the India-Australia Strategic Research Fund, Sibal and Carr agreed to further strengthen bilateral scientific cooperation focussing on industrial research and development and high technology areas such as nano-composites, bio-energy, health and agricultural bio-technology, climate change and renewable energy particularly using photo-voltaic technology.

They also agreed to set-up a joint working group to create a roadmap for strengthening bilateral cooperation in science and technology in the next six months.

In an address to the Australia-India Business Council at Sydney, Sibal invited Australian Industry to jointly work with their Indian counterparts to access global markets for the production of world class products at affordable prices using complimentary strengths available in two countries.

During the visit, Sibal met other leaders and also visited three of the Austria's group of eight universities  and noted research institutions.

Sibal's week-long visit to Australia as a guest of the Australian government from 7 to 12 February. He is the first Indian minister to visit the country after the new Labour government of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was sworn in on 3 December 2007.
