01 November 2007
Mumbai: At least 90 Indian workers have been arrested for violent protests by workers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) during the weekend while their 3,900 compatriots have been released after a brief detention.

Over 4500 South Asians, mostly Indians, had been taken into custody after the protests by workers to press their demands for better wages and working conditions at a labour camp in the UAE.

Those arrested for alleged involvement in violence total 159, including 90 Indians.

Most of the others, including 3900 Indians, have been released after giving an undertaking, both orally and in writing, that they have no grievance with the employers and had not participated in violence.
