Mumbai: Industrial production in the country rose 10.7 per cent in August
this year compared to 10.3 per cent in the corresponding period of the previous
year. According
to quick estimates by the Central Statistical Organisation, the general index
of industrial production (IIP) for August 2007 stood at 256.5 points, which is
10.7 per cent higher compared to its August 2006 level. Cumulative
growth for the period April-August 2007-08 was 9.8 per cent above the corresponding
period of the pervious year. The
indices for the mining, manufacturing and electricity sectors for August 2007
stood at 159.2, 278.3, and 219.9 respectively, with the corresponding growth rates
of 17.1 per cent, 10.4 per cent and 9.2 per cent in August 2006. Cumulative
growth during April-August, 2007-08 over the corresponding 2006-07 period in the
three sectors have been 5.4 per cent, 10.3 per cent and 8.3 per cent respectively,
which moved the overall growth in the general index to 9.8 per cent As
many as 15 of the 17 industry groups have shown positive growth during August
2007. Wood and
wood products furniture and fixtures have shown the highest growth of 62.2 per
cent; other manufacturing industries rose by 21.8 per cent; basic metal and alloy
industries rose by 19.1 per cent; metal products and parts (except machinery and
equipment) declined by 2.6 per cent; textile products (including apparel) declined
by 2.1 per cent Sectorwise,
capital goods recorded the highest growth at 30.0 per cent; basic goods recorded
a growth of 13.3 per cent; intermediate goods grew 12.3 per cent; consumer durables
and consumer non-durables, however, registered negative growths of 6.2 per cent
and 3.2 per cent respectively, with the overall growth in consumer goods being
0.5 per cent. There
are no significant variations in the indices in the second (final) revision for
May 2007 and the first revision for July 2007on the basis of the updated data.
