Quick estimates of index of industrial production for June, 2007 news

The Central Statistical Organisation of the ministry of statistics and programme implementation has released quick estimates of index of industrial production (IIP) for June 2007 with 1993-94 as the base year. In a press release it said:

1. The general index stands at 257.3, which is 9.8 per cent higher as compared to the level in the month of June 2006. The cumulative growth for the period April-June 2007-08 stands at 11.0 per cent over the corresponding period of the pervious year.

2. The IIP for the mining, manufacturing and electricity sectors for the month of June 2007 stand at 161.8, 275.8, and 211.7 respectively, with the corresponding growth rates of 3.6 per cent, 10.6 per cent and 6.8 per cent as compared to June 2006.

The cumulative growth during April-June, 2007-08 over the corresponding period of 2006-07 in the three sectors have been 3.2 per cent, 11.9 per cent and 8.3 per cent respectively, which moved the overall growth in the General Index to 11.0 per cent

3. In terms of industries, as many as 16 out of the 17 industry groups (as per 2-digit NIC-1987) have shown positive growth during the month of June 2007 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year.

  • The industry group wood and wood products; furniture and fixtures have shown the highest growth of 103.9 per cent, followed by
  • 35.2 per cent in jute and other vegetable fibre textiles (except cotton) and
  • 32.5 per cent in other manufacturing industries.
  • On the other hand, the industry group metal products and parts, except machinery and equipment have shown a negative growth of 7.7 per cent.

4. As per use-based identification, the sectoral growth rates in June 2007 over June 2006 are:

  • 9.6 per cent in basic goods
  • 29.0 per cent in capital goods and
  • 8.3 per cent in intermediate goods.
  • Consumer durables and consumer non-durables have recorded growth of 0.6 per cent and 5.4 per cent respectively, with the overall growth in Consumer goods being 4.2 per cent.

5. Along with the quick estimates of IIP for June 2007, the indices for May 2007 have undergone the first revision and those for March 2007 have undergone the second (final) revision in the light of the updated data received from the source agencies. There are no significant revisions in the indices for March 2007 and May 2007.

6. Statements giving quick estimates of the IIP at sectoral, 2-digit level of national industrial classification (NIC) 1987 and by use-based identification for the month of June 2007, along with the growth rates over the corresponding month of previous year, including the cumulative indices and growth rates, are enclosed.
