Mumbai:
India will soon open its education sector to foreign universities, science and
technology minister Kapil Sibal said. "We
are going to open up our education sector to foreign universities and it is going
to be one of the largest FDI earners," Sibal said on the sidelines of the
Tehelka summit on the ''Challenge of India'', in London. Sibal
said relevant legislation for the purpose was on the anvil. "All foreign
universities would be allowed in India," he said. Sibal
said the main concern of the government was how to actually spread education and
allow talents to grow in India. Sibal
had, last month, complained about lack of funds for the education sector and had
blamed the finance ministry for non-allocation of funds, which he said resulted
in shelving of the Right to Education bill. Sibal
said the bill was in the preparatory stage almost three years back. "We
had done a comprehensive calculation and had estimated that India needs Rs80,000
crore more for primary education in addition
to its current annual expenditure of Rs47,000 crore," the science and technology
minister then said. Sibal
said both the private sector and government sectors need to focus on primary education
and improvement of healthcare facilities.
