Mumbai:
Indirect tax collections in the country, including
customs and excise duty as well as service tax, were up
22.4 per cent at Rs169,863 crore during April-December
2006 from the year-ago period, figures provided by the
finance ministry showed.
With
continued buoyancy in corporate profits and the economy
on an over 9 per cent growth rate, indirect tax collections
rose by as much as Rs31,064 crore during the first nine
month-period this fiscal compared to the corresponding
period last fiscal.
Customs
duty collections rose by an impressive 34.3 per cent at
Rs70,872 crore during April-January 2006-07, against Rs52,768
crore during the corresponding period last fiscal. In
spite of cuts in customs duty on cement, steel, maize,
edible oil and certain other items in January, collections
were up 37.1 per cent at Rs6,920 crore as against Rs5,047
crore during the same month last year.
Excise
collections remained sluggish in January with a growth
rate of 3.9 per cent at Rs10,428 crore against Rs10,037
crore during the same period last fiscal. For the April-January
period, collections recorded a growth rate of just 6 per
cent at Rs90,677 crore as against Rs85,528 crore during
the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.
Service
tax collections for the 9-month period ended December
2006, however, showed a growth of 64.6 per cent, touching
Rs25,662 crore as against Rs15,587 crore during the corresponding
period last fiscal.
