World Bank expects ruling on Baglihar Dam on 12 Februarynews
09 February 2007

The World Bank expects a final ruling by the neutral expert appointed by it to resolve the dispute between India and Pakistan over the construction of the Baglihar Dam on the Chenab River on 12 February.

The World Bank had appointed Raymond Lafitte, a Swiss professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne as the expert on April 20, 2005, to resolve the differences between the countries regarding the Baglihar project.

As both India and Pakistan have agreed to the outcome, the bank says the decision of Professor Lafitte on all matters within his competence would be final and binding
The bank also said it was up to India and Pakistan to make public the Lafitte's decision.

The dispute over the 450-megawatt hydroelectric dam in South Kashmir revolves water flows to Pakistan. The country says the project violates a 1960 World Bank-brokered water-sharing treaty, known as the Indus Waters Treaty.

According to the treaty, the Indus river has been divided between the two countries and allows India to generate electricity buts disallows it from interfering with the water flow to Pakistan.
