Thiruvananthapuram: The Southwest monsoon set in over the Kerala coast on Sunday, a full week behind schedule.

Major amounts of rainfall received during the 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Sunday were: Karipur Airport (Kozhikode): 14 cm; Kochi: 8 cm; Alappuzha: 7 cm; Kozhikode city: 6 cm; Thrissur: 4 cm; Kottayam, Cherthala and Haripad: 3 cm each.

Monsoon conditions are expected to continue to be active in Kerala over the next two-three days as the Arabian Sea branch of the monsoon, which proved the Achilles' heel in this year's onset scheme of things, suddenly gathered steam to cross the Southwest coast with typical flourish biased to the north.

It is expected to cover coastal and south interior Karnataka as the rain-bearing south-westerlies pick up speed and extend themselves to higher levels.
