Government to amend existing labour laws news

26 February 2002
Kochi: Union Health Minister C P Thakur said the central government has decided to amend the existing labour laws, especially the Industries Disputes Act (IDA), because of the understanding that such laws will only lead to closing down many industries.

He said before taking the decision to amend the IDA, the centre has two options before it. "We should either protect the law and let all industries die, or go in for labour reforms. The people in Kerala should think why many of the industries set up here have been shifted to other states."

Referring to the recognition issue to two medical colleges in the state the Kochi Cooperative Medical College and the Pariyaram Medical College the minister promised that the centre will do all that is possible to avoid a situation in which the future of the students of these colleges will not be jeopardised. "I have written to the state government earlier to make some adjustments and improve the infrastructure. But now Kerala is in a financial crisis. But I assure you that the students future will not be affected."

Observing that China is overtaking even Japan in industrialisation, Thakur said the recent influx of Chinese products into Indian markets at a cheaper rate has led to some of the people in the country arguing that the Chinese are able to sell these products at such cheaper rates because of the subsidy they get from their government. "But that is not the actual case. The per capita production in China is much higher when compared to India. That is why they have been able to market their products at a much cheaper rate."
