New
Delhi: Steel secretary Nripinder Nath Khanna
and a top-brass Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) team are to
lead a steel mission to the US between 14 and 18 January 2002. The
mission is jointly organised by the ministry of steel and CII. A
series of high-powered meetings with economic think-tanks, key
government officials, Congressmen and the industry are scheduled
during the mission.
Other members of the delegation include: Tata Sons director Dr Jamshed
J Irani; Steel Authority of India chairman Arvind Pande; Essar Steel
managing director J Mehra; Jindal Vijayanagar Steel director
(international marketing) Shrireesh Waman Wagh; Ispat Industries
senior vice-president (marketing) Barin Das; and CII senior director
Kiran Pasricha.
The mission will discuss the issue of import restrictions imposed on
the Indian steel by the US government via Sec 201. Talks will also be
held on the Multilateral Trade Agreement (MSA), imposed by the US to
instill a greater discipline on foreign unfair trade practices in the
US steel sector.
The
mission will involve meetings with Faryar Shirzad, assistant secretary
for import administration, US department of commerce; Tony Wayne,
assistant secretary, department of economic, business and agricultural
Affairs, US department of commerce; Brink Lindsey, director, Center
for Trade Policy Studies (CTPS), the Cato Institute; Daniel Grisworld,
associate director, CTPS; Dan Ikenson, trade policy analyst, CTPS;
Grant Aldonas, under secretary for international trade administration,
US department of commerce; and Barry Solarz, vice-president, American
Iron and Steel Institute.
