Foodgrain production sets all-time record of 227.32 MT in 2007-08 news

2007-08 has been a bumper year for Indian agriculture. Acccording to the Third Advance Estimates of production of major crops grown in the country, released by the department of agriculture and cooperation yesterday Foodgrains production at 227.32 million tonnes during 2007-08 is estimated to be an all time record, with record rice production of  95.68 MT and 76.68 MT of wheat. Coarse cereal production is estimated at 39.67 MT and 15.19 million tonnes of pulses.

Oilseeds production during 2007-08 is estimated at 28.21 million tonnes with groundnut estimated at 8.87 million tonnes, soyabean at 9.43 million tonnes and rapeseed and mustard at 6.43 million tonnes. Production of cotton is estimated at 23.19 million bales of 170 kg each. Production of sugarcane is estimated at 344.23 million tonnes during 2007-08.

Compared to 2006-07, rice production is estimated to increase by about 2 million tonnes, wheat by about 1 million tonne, coarse cereals by about 6 million tonnes (mainly contributed by maize) and pulses by about 1 million tonne  during 2007-08. The oilseeds production is estimated to increase by about 4 million tonnes (mainly contributed by groundnut) and cotton by about 6 lakh bales during 2007-08 over 2006-07.

The latest assessment is based on the feedback received from the states and validated with the information available from other sources. The estimated production of various crops as per the Third Advance Estimates for 2007-08 vis-à-vis Final Estimates of 2006-07 are provided in the table 3rd Advance Estimates of Production of Foodgrains, Oilseeds and Other

Government confident of procuring up to 170 LT wheat this year: Pawar 
Government is confident of procuring up to 170 lakh tonnes of wheat this year against a target of 150 lakh tonnes, agriculture and food minister Sharad Pawar said this morning.

Inaugurating the state agriculture ministers conference in New Delhi, Pawar said, "I am confident of procuring 160-170 lakh tonnes of wheat this year." In the last 10 days the average procurement in Punjab and Haryana has been 99.6 per cent of the market arrival of wheat in these states.The government has so far procured 86 lakh tonnes of wheat till now this season from different states.

In view of the positive sign in procurement and good production, the minister ruled out importing wheat this year."As of now I don't see a need for import of wheat," he said.

The government had imported 18 lakh tonnes of wheat last year after procurement declined to 111 lakh tonnes against a target of 150 lakh tonnes.India is estimated to have produced 76.78 million tonnes of wheat during 2007-08 crop year ending May this year.
