Foodgrain production in 2007-08 expected to top 219 million tonnes news

Mumbai: Foodgrain production in the country during 2007-08 is expected to reach an all-time high of 219.32 million tonnes, according to latest estimates released by the agriculture ministry.

The ministry, however, has revised wheat output downward by 1.3 per cent.

According to the agriculture ministry's second advance estimates of production of foodgrains, oilseeds and other commercial crops during 2007-08, foodgrains production is expected to reach an all-time record at 219.32 million tonnes during 2007-08.

Rice production, estimated, at 94.08 million tonnes, maize production at 16.78 million tonnes, soyabean production at 9.45 million tonnes,  cotton production at 23.38 million bales (170 kg each) during 2007-08, are all estimated to reach all-time highs.

Wheat production is seen lower at 74.81 million tonnes, while coarse cereals production is expected to reach 36.09 million tonnes and pulses at 14.34 million tonnes.

Oilseeds production during 2007-08 is estimated at 27.16 million tonnes with groundnut estimated at 7.29 million tonnes, soyabean at 9.45 million tonnes and rapeseed and mustard at 7.07 million tonnes.

Production of sugarcane is estimated at 340.32 million tonnes during 2007-08.

The revised estimates of production of major crops are based on the feedback received from the states and validated with the information available from other sources, the ministry said in a release.
