US to fast-track N-deal ratification by Congress news
05 August 2008

Mumbai: The Bush administration has fast-tracked the Indo-US civil nuclear deal with the state department announcing that the deal will be tabled for congressional approval on 8 September.

''Hopefully, we'll be able to represent this to Congress on September 8'', state department spokesman Gonzalo Gonzales said, adding, the US was looking forward to discussing the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal with the 45-member Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), which is expected to meet in Vienna on August 21.

''Now that the IAEA has voted, we're going to look to discuss this issue with the members of the Nuclear Suppliers Group. We're hoping to get a positive result out of that some time in the next month," Gonzales said.

He said the Bush administration would be able to have this initiative finished by Congress by the time it wraps up the session on 26 September.

A speedy implementation of the deal would also strengthen bilateral trade between the countries, he said.

Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the House of Representatives and the senate majority leader Harry Reid are sticking to the 26 September target adjournment date for ratifying the accord.

Assistant secretary of state Richard Boucher, however, had said in Colombo that the US would push through "expeditiously" the NSG process but said India may not expect a ''clean waiver'' from the bloc.

India, however, is pressing for a "clean" and "unconditional" waiver from the NSG to take the Indo-US nuclear deal forward and said it does not expect any new conditions since that would nullify the safeguards pact cleared by the IAEA.
