PM returns with G8 endorsement; summoned by President Patil news

Even as Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh returns late tonight after having won crucial endorsement from the pwerful G8 industrialised countries for its civillian nuclear cooperation pact with the US, President Pratibha Patil has asked Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to meet her tomorrow, following demands from the NDA, particularly thee BJP, for the UPA government to prove its majority. 

Events are moving at a rapid pace. Earlier in the day came the news of the IAEA board likely to meet on 28 July to move ahead with the new nuclear rules for India (See: PM lauds Indo-US partnership as ''strategic''; IAEA board meet likely 28 July), to facilitate a meeting of the nuclear suppliers group (NSG) at an early date in August.

The G8 chairman said in a statement at the end of a three-day summit  today stated that the G8 had decided to adopt a more robust approach to the civil nuclear cooperation with India and international organisations to help the country meet its growing energy needs.

The statement was issued within hours of the meeting that Dr Manmohan Singh had with US President George Bush on the sidelines of the summit.

The statement said that the G8 looked forward to working with India, the International Atomic Energy Agency, the Nuclear Suppliers Group and other partners to "advance India's non-proliferation commitments and progress so as to facilitate a more robust approach to civil nuclear cooperation" to help the country meet its growing energy needs in a a way that would enhance the global non-proliferation regime.
