Within a week after India announced the set up of an integrated cell to co-ordinate military operations based on space assets, the Army's Directorate of Perspective Planning (DoPP) is set to organise a training programme for officers to help them understand the tricks of the trade, according to Army sources.

To be inaugurated by General Deepak Kapoor, Chief of the Army Staff (CoAS), the seminar will look into the role of space-based applications in recent conflicts around the world. Now, set themselves to make a foray into the use of space-based applications, the officers of the Indian Army would get an exposure into the US forces' experience in optimising the effective use of space-based resources to meet operational requirements.

According to sources, the use of space-based assets by the US forces during conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq would be debated, and Army officers would learn the practices adopted by the US forces in utilising space applications to counter enemies in battles in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The meet will be organised in association with the Centre for Land Warfare Studies (CLAWS), and would witness officers discussing and imbibing "space-based application used by the military of the space-faring nations.''
