Singur talks inconclusive; Left Front convenes emergency meeting news
06 September 2008

Mumbai: The second day's talks to end the deadlock over land acquisition for Tata's `Nano' project in Singur, West Bengal remained inconclusive with the Trinamool Congress-led opposition and a government panel agreeing to meet again tomorrow.

The two sides have discussed in detail the prospects of a land-based rehabilitation scheme in and around Singur project site, according to a statement issued by Raj Bhavan.

Tata NanoThe meeting, presided over by West Bengal governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi, however, ended without a solution despite a positive note struck at the end of the first day's talks.

Political activity was also subdued at the dharna site of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee.

Trinamool Congress leader Partha Chatterjee merely said talks will resume tomorrow. He did not comment on the progress of talks.

Meanwhile, the Left Front has convened an emergency meeting here tomorrow to discuss the Singur imbroglio. LF sources said the meeting would be held in the morning.

With the crucial issue of  returning land to unwilling farmers in Singur remaining the only stumbling block, convening of the emergency meeting of the Front has fuelled speculation that the Singur problem was heading towards a solution.

Kalyan Banerjee, a TC leader who was present at the talks, said the issue of land was being discussed.

Industry minister Nirupam Sen had also said last night that the possibility and practicability of returning land was discussed on the first day of talks.

Sen and Partha Chatterjee, a key negotiator of the Trinamool Congress, had both said they were hopeful of a solution.
