HP maintains the server market edge: IDC

Mumbai: HP has maintained its 10-year lead in the x86 server market with a 34.5 per cent factory revenue share for the period, according to figures released by IDC for the second quarter of 2006.

HP retained its No 1 position in total worldwide server unit shipments as well, outsmarting other major vendors in the worldwide server market for the 17th consecutive quarter. HP took the No 2 spot for total server factory revenue with 27.8 per cent of the market.

HP also remained No. 1 in total worldwide factory revenue and units for the x86-64, AMD Opteron and Intel Itanium-based server markets. HP was leader in all three of the major operating systems combined - Windows, Linux and UNIX - which comprise more than 96 per cent of all servers shipped worldwide.

"Not only has HP led the world in industry-standard servers for the last 10 years, but we've also had strong growth in important emerging markets like blades, Integrity and Linux," said Mark Hudson, vice president of marketing, enterprise storage and servers, HP. "This confirms that our ongoing investments will enable us to continue to lead in delivering value to our customers," he added.

HP provides technology solutions to consumers, businesses and institutions globally. The company's offerings span IT infrastructure, global services, business and home computing, and imaging and printing. For the four fiscal quarters ended July 31, 2006, HP revenue totaled $90 billion.
