Uttar Pradesh Transport Department proposes denying fuel to drivers not wearing helmets
04 Nov 2014
The Uttar Pradesh Transport Department has suggested that people driving two-wheelers without wearing helmets or cars without fastening seat belts should be denied fuel, PTI reported.
In a letter written to all district magistrates, transport commissioner K Ravindra Naik said as per the data provided by the traffic directorate, a total of 1,200 accidents occured between 1 January and 31 March this year and 594 people were killed in the mishaps.
He said in Lucknow yesterday, that under the Central Motor Vehicle Act, it was mandatory for drivers to use helmet while riding a two-wheeler and seat belt while riding a four-wheeler.
According to Naik, effective implementation of this provision would reduce the number of accidents.
He suggested convening a meeting of petrol dealers of the district and making them aware of heavy loss of life and property from accidents.
The commissioner suggested it needed to be ensured that fuel was denied to drivers unless they adhered to the provision of wearing seat belts or helmets.
