Students from the Zhejiang University recently hacked into the controls of the Tesla Model S with an attack that allowed them to open its doors and sun roof, switch on the headlights and sound the horn, The Register reported.

The exploit formed part a competition at the annual Syscan conference in Beijing, where a prize of $10,000 was offered to anyone who could pop the smartcar's doors and engine.

Though Tesla welcomed the competition it did not extend official support but said it would investigate any exploits developed against the Model S.

The hack came from an entrant team 'yo' which exploited an unspecified flaw in the flow design of the car gaining access to the Model S and allowing alterations of the car functions, even as it continued to be in motion.

Security company Qihoo 360, which sponsored the competition, said on a Weibo social media post that additional details of the hack would be published in due course.

In a statement Tesla said it supported "the idea of providing an environment in which responsible security researchers can help identify potential vulnerabilities" and hoped "security researchers will act responsibly and in good faith".
