Mumbai: India's largest private carrier, Jet Airways, may be in talks with Hyderabad-based infrastructure developer GMR Group for a 24 per cent stake in a proposed aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) venture being set up at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad.

GMR-Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL), a company started by GMR to run the airport, is building the facility in partnership with Malaysia Airlines Ltd to provide maintenance services on narrow- and wide-body aircraft.

Earlier, GMR had tied up with Lufthansa Technik AG for the venture with th elatter holding a 75 per cent stake. However, Lufthansa backed out for unknown reasons.

Airline officials expressed their keenness about the MRO project, saying that it made commercial sense to have a repair centre and to hold a stake in it. Besides a financial investment, Jet Airways also has the option to pick up a stake by offering guaranteed slots of airplanes for repairs.

Along with its subsidiary, JetLite Ltd, Jet Airways operates 109 planes.

DGCA data projects deliveries of more than 200 aircraft in India over the next two years.
