New Delhi: The ministry of civil aviation has accorded 'in-principle' approval for the construction of an international airport at Meerut, a city in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, situated quite close to New Delhi, the country's capital. The sanction has been granted keeping in mind an expected surge in traffic to the nation's capital for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

The airport will also cater to international Hajj flights apart from linking Uttar Pradesh to the rest of the country.

The Government has sanctioned nearly Rs73 crore for land acquisition related to the airport site. This process will commence once the required clearances have been given by the ministries of civil aviation, forests and environment and defence.

The sanction has also kept in mind research on the region's traffic density, performed by the state civil aviation department.
