Chennai: Chennai's Anna International Airport will see  construction on a new, second domestic terminal start sometime over the coming two months. The project has a time schedule of 28 months.

According to Dinesh Kumar, airport director of the Chennai International Airport, the second domestic terminal will have two-level terminals with a departure area on first floor and an arrival area on ground floor, covering 67,000 square metres.

The terminal will also have three aero-bridges, common use terminal equipment terminals and other state-of-the-art facilities. An aero-bridge will also be added to the international arrival terminal that is scheduled for completion around the end of the year. Another four aero-bridges will be constructed in both the domestic and international terminals.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is planning to spend around Rs1,800 crore to extend the second runway as part of the expansion program for the existing airport.

Reports suggest that the acquisition of land by the Tamil Nadu government is not progressing as planned on account of protests from residents whose lands have been identified for acquisition. Residents say that an expansion of the airport will lead to flooding during the monsoons.
