New Delhi: Toulouse, France–based Airbus SAS delivered more airliners and secured larger orders in the first half of the year than arch-rival Chicago-headquartered Boeing Co. In the process it also bettered its own delivery and order numbers over 2010.

Airbus said yesterday it delivered over 258 jets to customers this year through June, eight more than it delivered in the first six months of 2010.

For the same period, Boeing said it delivered 222 aircraft, unchanged from a year ago.

For the first half of this year, Airbus said it secured 640 new orders taking into account 137 cancellations. Boeing's net orders fell to 171, down from 177 a year ago.

Both manufacturers are boosting production to reduce record backlogs.

While Airbus has racked up huge orders for its A320neo derivative, a new version of its popular narrow-body A320 jet, Boeing will commence deliveries of its new, delayed 787 Dreamliner and the stretched 747-8 jumbos.

It claims both these models, scheduled for delivery from September this year, will allow it reclaim the top position from Airbus.

Boeing expects to deliver 485 to 500 aircraft this year, up from 462 last year.
