US-based business jet manufacturing company, Stratos Aircraft, announced its plans to build an all-composite, single-engine, very light jet. Named the Stratos 714, the jet will have a range of 1,500 nm at 400 knots.

The company has been founded by aerospace engineer Carsten Sundin and entrepreneur Michael Lamaire with ambition of building a four-seat jet with greater speed, range and weather capabilities than currently available in this class.

Stratos 714According to the company, the $2 million Stratos 714 will have the ''latest in advanced avionics, flight management systems and flight into known icing functionality.''

"The VLJ market is littered with a variety of concepts and designs that are all very good in their own right for operators with different needs," stated Carsten Sundin, Chief Technical Officer of Stratos Aircraft. "However, for performance-oriented pilots who simply don't need more than four seats, the current field of VLJs just doesn't make sense for one reason or another. Either the acquisition and operating costs of a larger - and slower - VLJ are too high, or the compromise between range and payload makes the aircraft impractical," Sundin concluded.

"In a nutshell, our objective is to design and manufacture an aircraft that is affordable to own and operate, is easy to master, and can carry enough fuel and baggage to make the 1,500 nautical mile range at 400 knots the true selling point, and not simply two unrelated data points in a brochure," stated CEO Michael Lemaire.

A 3,030-pound-thrust Fadec-controlled Williams FJ44-3AP turbofan will power the 7,000-pound-max gross weight airplane. Stratos said the jet's single engine will be able to maintain sea-level cabin altitude through FL250 and a 6,000-foot cabin altitude up to its maximum operating altitude of FL410.

The company lists ''production availability'' in the first quarter of 2010.
