17 Jul 2008
Aviation engine manufacturer Pratt and Whitney has announced the creation of a new engine family, "PurePower Engines," and has re-designated the Geared Turbofan as the PurePower PW1000G.
As part of the re-branding , the PW800 small turbofan designed for the business jet market now becomes the PurePower PW800.
Pratt and Whitney's PW1000G has been selected as the exclusive power plant for Mitsubishi's regional jet and the Cseries launched by Bombardier a few days ago. Pratt and Whitney also has a letter of interest from Lufthansa for 30 firm and 30 options.
Pratt's vice president for next generation product family, Bob Saia said that the PW1000G demonstrator engine made its first flight on 11 July, fitted to the company's 747SP flying test-bed, and performed "flawlessly" on two flights.
The testing is scheduled to be completed in two phases, with the first phase set to run for approximately 40 hours on Pratt's test-bed. In the second phase, the engine will be fitted on an Airbus-owned A340 and will be flown for approximately 75 hours.
The second phase is scheduled for the fourth quarter.
