Hong Kong: With the aviation sector in the Asia –Pacific region experiencing booming growth, US aircraft manufacturer Boeing said Monday there was a serious pilot shortfall prevailing in the region, with some carriers forced to trim operations and ground new planes because of the shortfall.

According to Boeing though the region boasts of about 60,000 pilots and 46,000 technicians, it  will need more than 180,000 in extra pilots and almost 250,000 new technicians over the next two decades to meet demand.

It indicated that China would face the largest shortfalls.

Senior company officials say the moot question is how airlines in the region are going to get the new recruits? They point out that some airlines in the region have already discontinued or reduced flights due to the shortage.

They also said carriers have even grounded new aircraft.

Without naming carriers, they said countries affected by the shortfall included India, the Philippines and Indonesia.
