The Singapore-based Tiger Airways will launch flights between Melbourne and Sydney in July, expanding its presence in the low-cost arena. It announced that from 3 July, there would be up to four daily flights between the two state capitals, priced from $68 one way.

"Melbourne-Sydney is one of the most popular routes in both Australia and indeed the whole world," said Tiger Airways Australia managing director Shelley Roberts. "With Tiger Airways' new flight route, more people than ever will be able to travel between the two destinations more often and for the first time at consistently low fares.''

The decision would seem to be in response to the new Quantas partnership with Singapore businessman Dennis Choo, which is aimed at the low-priced sector.

''We have had such an overwhelming demand from passengers for this service, it is great that we are finally able to connect the two cities,'' Roberts said. ''This is particularly pleasing at a time when some other airlines are cutting schedules and in comparison, Tiger Airways is adding to its network.

''Clearly the consumers want the Tiger offering because we are clearly the market leaders when it comes to low fares. Now we are bringing that to the people of Sydney,'' she added.

The airline will offer a standard $68 fare between the two cities, a tick under the price Jetstar offers between Sydney and Avalon and about $20 cheaper than Virgin Blue's lowest fare.

Since its days of launching shock single-digit fares shortly after its inception, Tiger Airways has maintained its primacy in the low-fare leader sector, a title Roberts said she was willing to protect at all costs.

Rival Virgin Blue, meanwhile, has signed an interline agreement with newcomer Air Austral, a French carrier set to enter the Australian market this month.
