BMW overtakes rival Mercedes in June car sales

Munich, Germany: BMW, the German luxury automaker sold a record 150,285 cars worldwide in June, 15.1 per cent more than in the same month last year, and ahead of arch rival Mercedes built by DaimlerChrysler.
Europe is still BMW's biggest market, with unit sales there jumping by 15.9 per cent to 90,310 cars in June. China, where the luxury car maker clocked up its strongest growth, saw unit sales zooming ahead by 63.2 per cent to 5,925 cars last month.
BMW's Mini also set a new record last month, with sales rising by 19.4 per cent to 22,465 units in June. Sales of the BMW brand alone rose by 14.4 per cent to 127,747 cars, while the Group sold 73 Rolls Royce Phantoms, unchanged on the year.
Taking the period from January to June in-Toto, BMW sold a total 730,285 of its BMW-brand, Mini and Rolls-Royce cars worldwide, a rise of 4.6 per cent of the year-earlier period.
Earlier in the
week, DaimlerChrysler admitted a decline in worldwide
sales of its Mercedes brand cars, down by 1.3 per cent
to 117,200 units in June, as a result of a shake-up
of the model portfolio of its ultra-compact Smart cars.
Taking the six months from January to June, DaimlerChrysler's
customer deliveries were down 1.5 per cent at 617,700
units.
