STMicro expands Noida operations
New Delhi: Semiconductor major, ST Microelectronics, has started work on a new 25- acre complex at Greater Noida near Delhi and plans to induct 500 engineers in the current year. The company has committed an investment of $100 million to its India operations over the next five years. ST Micro has been designing integrated circuits and developing software solutions in the country since 1992. The Noida facility is the company's largest design facility outside Europe.

BSNL's broadband services slated for the 3rd quarter
Hyderabad: The state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd, (BSNL), is in the process of developing Phase II of the National Information Backbone (NIB) and expects to roll out its broadband services to both corporate and home segments in the third quarter this year. According to BSNL, the second phase was expected to cover Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Rajahmundry and Cuddapah and would be linked to the national network.

This would enable wide range of customer requirements including security, quality of service, higher bandwidth on demand, secure VPN (virtual private network), high speed Internet service, video on demand and other value added and data services. Apart from providing broadband on demand by deploying DSL (digital subscriber loop) technology, the corporation was also set to upgrade its Internet nodes at all district headquarters.

Simultaneously efforts are on for the installation of the IN (intelligent network) platform which is under validation. The broadband network would complement the existing ISDN network wherein users will have access through the dial-up connectivity. BSNL plans to deploy about 1000 lines to strengthen the existing Internet service wherein about 450 centres are being expanded.

LG to launch six new models
New Delhi: LG has announced its plans to launch six new models of cellular phones in the country. Scheduled for the next four months, the new launches will widen the company's portfolio to 12 GSM models in India. Of these six three will be new colour phone models, while three would be camera models. The phones would be in the range of Rs 6000 to Rs 18000.

ONGC: Bids for marginal fields in July
Mumbai: The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) would invite competitive international bids for developing 19 marginal fields by July. About 47 companies have submitted expression of interest (EOI) for the same. Companies from countries including Malaysia, Canada and UK have submitted EoIs for development of these fields, which are estimated to have 63 MMT of oil and 29 BCM of gas.
