Sale
of petrol blended with ethanol allowed
New
Delhi: In a
significant decision that will help save foreign exchange and
boost prospects of sugarcane growers and oil industry, the Centre
announced in the Lok Sabha on Monday that petrol will be allowed
to be blended with ethanol for sale.
In a suo motu statement,
petroleum minister Ram Naik said that sale of petrol blended with
ethanol at the rate of 5 per cent in the country will be
implemented in two phases.
During the first phase,
Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Punjab,
Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh would be covered and, in the second
phase, the rest of the country, he added.
He said the existing
three pilot projects would take up blending of ethanol in petrol
at the rate of 10 per cent after sorting the issues such as
modifications of specifications of the Bureau of Indian Standards.

to host meet on globalisation
Hyderabad:
IIMNet, the alumni network of all the six Indian Institutes of
Management, is organizing a two-day seminar on globalisation here
from 15 December in which leading Indian corporate chiefs are
expected to participate.
Anji Reddy, Dr Reddy's
Laboratories chairman, Ramalinga Raju of the Satyam Computer
Services, V. Srinivasan, director of Centurion Bank, S.
Ramachandran, managing director of Tata Teleservices Ltd, V.
Balaraman, executive director (exports), Hindustan Lever and K.
Ramachandran, managing director of Philips India have confirmed
participation.
The directors of all the
six IIMs at Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Indore, Lucknow and
Guwahati would also participate in the seminar. About 500
delegates from the corporate sector, services and government are
also expected to attend the event.

Ashok
Kumar passes away
Mumbai: Veteran
actor Ashok Kumar died at his residence here on Monday after a
prolonged illness. He was 90. He was cremated at the Chembur
crematorium in the presence of his family members and close
friends. He was honoured with numerous awards, including the
prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke award and the lifetime achievement
award in 1996.
