Reena Ramachandran quits as
Hindustan Organic chairman
Mumbai: Dr Reena Ramachandran, who has
been with the state run, Hindustan Organic Chemicals (HOC), for eight years, recently as
chairman and managing director of the company a position held by her for the last
five years.
While speaking to the Financial
Express, Dr. Ramachandran stated that she was quitting to seek better career options
in the private sector.
HOC, which was once a well
run state company, has recently seen several top officials leave. in addition to Dr.
Ramachandra, it is believed that Mr. N. Kalsi, director (marketing) has also left the
company. The companys slot of director (finance) has been lying vacant since
mid-January.
Dr. Ramachandran, who started
her career as a senior scientific officer in the ministry of science and technology,
joined HOC as director (marketing) in 1992 before taking over as CMD in March 1995. She
worked for a decade at the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) between 1982 and 1991. A
brief stint followed at the Petroleum Conservation Research Association as executive
director till 1992.
At HOC, she was instrumental
in a strategic move that saw several of the companys cost centres become profit
centres. These included the hospital in the Rasayani factory which could logically extend
its services commercially to the community in the area. Similarly, privatisation of the
transport operations in HOC (the company has a fleet of nearly 50 buses) helped reduce
overheads considerably.
Dr. Ramachandran has a PhD in
organic chemistry from Allahabad University and a doctorate in science from the University
of Nantes in France.
