Digital India chief quits
Bangalore: Srikanth Kannankote, chairman of Digital Equipment India, is quitting. He is leaving Compaq Computer Corporation, Houston, where he is director (professional services), by November end. He is chairamn of Digital Equipment India as a nominee of Compaq, which owns a 51 per cent stake in the Indian company. A Compaq spokesman said no decision has been taken on his successor.

Abdul Kalam is principal scientific adviser
New Delhi: A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, scientific adviser to India's defence minister, has been appointed principal scientific adviser to the government. A government notification said Prof Kalam will have the rank of a cabinet minister.

Manoharan joins TMB board
Chennai: S. Manoharan, a Nadar businessman from Sattur in Tamil Nadu, has joined the board of Tamilnadu Mercantile Bank as a director. With this, the number of directors representing the Nadar Mahajana Bank Share Investor Forum has increased to five.

The forum is mobilising funds from the community to raise Rs 110 crore to be paid for retrieving the shares of the bank from C. Sivasankaran of the Sterling group of companies.

World Bank chief economist quits
Washington: Joseph Stiglitz, World Bank’s chief economist and a respected analyst, is resigning from his post. Mr Stiglitz, in a resignation letter to World Bank president James Wolfensohn, expressed concern over falling research budgets, which he said are responsible for increasing poverty worldwide. He said at last he would be free to speak his mind.

Mr Stiglitz, who chaired President Bill Clinton’s council of economic advisors before moving to the World Bank three years ago, had clashed with the powerful US treasury and the IMF on economic reforms.
