Jack Welch, manager of the century
New York : General Electric's chairman and chief executive Jack Welch has been selected Fortune magazine's 'Manager of the Century'. He won over tough contenders such as Lee Iacocca, Percy Barnevik and Andy Grove. Though he did win criticism for the huge number of layoffs he engineered in the company, he has won admiration worldwide for turning GE into a quick paced organisation from the lumbering dinosaur it was threatening to turn into earlier.

Under Mr Welch, GE has been performing at its best ever. The company notched up its second consecutive record quarterly profit in the third quarter ended September 30. The first nine months found it posting a profit of $7.6 billion on revenues of $78.8 billion.
