Deshpande is richest US-Indian
San Francisco: Gururaj "Desh" Deshpande, chairman and founder of Sycamore Networks, is the richest Indian entrepreneur in the US. This follows the spectacular run of Sycamore on the Nasdaq where its shares are quoted at $270 on an initial public offering price of $38. Mr Deshpande has a 21 per cent stake in the company and owns shares worth about $3.02 billion.

Mr Deshpande, at this worth, is not only the richest Indian-American entrepreneur, but may be the richest Indian as well. The Forbes magazine had named Azim Premji, chairman of Wipro, as the richest Indian in September 1999 with a net worth of over $2.8 billion. Mr Premji, with Wipro stocks appreciating, may now be worth $3 billion, but Mr Deshpande, with Sycamore shares moving above $270 per share, may have a net worth of over $4 billion.
