S.K. Gupta takes
over as CMD of VSNL
Mumbai: Shailendra Kumar Gupta has taken
over as chairman and managing director of Videsh Sanchar
Nigam Ltd. Mr Gupta, who will turn 57 on 9 September, has
been chief general manager (telecom) Gujarat circle, of
the department of telecommunications, and was based in Ahmedabad.
He will shift to Mumbai to take up his new position.
With Mr Gupta's appointment, Amitabh Kumar,
acting chairman and managing director, who has been holding
the post since B.K. Syngal quit the organisation in June
1998, will revert to his position as director, operations.
He will be on the board of the company.

Parvathisem
is new Nalco chief
New Delhi: P. Parvathisem, now chairman
and managing director of public sector Hindustan Copper,
will be the new chairman and managing director of the
National Aluminium Company. The cabinet appointments committee
has cleared his name for the position.
Mr Parvathisem has over
30 years of experience in the mining industry. He will
take over from S.N. Johri, who retired from service in
July.

Vignaud
seeks Indian support for FAO post
New Delhi: Argentina's Juan Carlos Vignaud
is in New Delhi to muster support for his candidature
for the post of director-general of Food and Agriculture
Organisation. The present incumbent, Jacques Diouf, is
making a bid for a second term.
Mr Vignaud is Argentina's
ambassador to Sweden. The election for the position is
to be held on 13 November.
Mr Vignaud says he has an
agenda to revamp the FAO, which seemed to have lost its
original focus of wiping out hunger. He claims he has
support from 77 of FAO's 175 member countries.
