Markets saw selective profit booking after two days of strong gains. After moving sideways within a narrow range in morning trades, the indices slipped early in the afternoon. Frontline indices lost close to 0.5 per cent each and the Sensex declined below 11900.

The momentum built up over the last one month has made traders more confident and they were ready buyers at lower levels. Helped by an uptrend in ONGC and metal stocks, the indices recovered later in the afternoon and closed with marginal losses.

Sensex closed with losses of 10 points at 11905 and the Nifty lost 3 points to close at 3474. Nifty September futures closed at a discount of 3 points to the spot index.

Some of the stocks, which had seen substantial gains in recent sessions, closed lower today. Glaxo was the worst performer among index stocks, losing nearly 2.5 per cent.

Among other pharma stocks, Dr Reddy's lost nearly 1.5 per cent.
Zee Tele, which had gained nearly 8 per cent in 2 sessions, closed more than 2 per cent lower.

ICICI Bank lost 1.5 per cent after gaining over 2 per cent yesterday.

Tata Motors, the best performing auto stock yesterday, lost over a per cent.

Among other losers, Wipro, Tata Power, BPCL and ITC lost nearly 1.5 per cent each while Suzlon closed more than a per cent lower.

Select metal stocks saw a rally in afternoon trades. Hindalco added nearly 2.5 per cent while Tata Steel gained more than 1.5 per cent. Nalco closed a per cent higher.

Reliance Energy also saw an up trend in the afternoon and was the best performer among index stocks, with gains of nearly 3 per cent.

Cement stocks were firm throughout the day and closed with strong gains. ACC added nearly 2.5 per cent and Gujarat Ambuja Cement gained close to 1.5 per cent. Grasim closed a per cent higher.

ONGC was also firm for most of the session and finally ended with gains of close to 1.5 per cent.

BHEL, Reliance Communications, Cipla and SBI were the other major gainers.

Global markets / crude oil
US markets were closed yesterday.

Asian markets were mixed after two days of substantial gains on selective profit booking. Japan and South Korea sustained the up trend with gains of around 0.15 per cent each. Shanghai added 0.4 per cent.

Malaysia and Hong Kong lost around 0.45 per cent each while Thailand lost 0.35 per cent. Singapore and Indonesia closed with marginal losses.

European markets once again opened with marginal gains before slipping. Major indices are trading with losses of between 0.3 per cent and 0.7 per cent each in early afternoon trades.

Crude oil prices closed with losses of nearly 2 per cent at $68.02 per barrel yesterday. Near month NYMEX futures is trading with gains of around $0.5 per barrel in European trades today.

Large-cap news flow

  • Reliance Communications has commercially launched its 11,500km high-capacity undersea cable network connecting four continents and 11 countries.
  • Officers of PSU oil companies like HPCL, BPCL and Indian Oil have decided to postpone their strike which was to start today as per earlier announcement.
  • Fiat would jointly develop a low-cost car with Tata Motors, according to news agency reports quoting the Fiat CEO.

Mid-Cap Action
Mid-caps and small caps extended their gains, despite the subdued trend in large caps. Some of the major gainers from recent sessions saw selective profit booking.

The CNX Mid-Cap index ended with gains of 21 points, or 0.49 per cent, to finish the day at 4429. BSE mid-cap index gained 0.57 per cent and the BSE small cap index added 0.32 per cent.

Vimta Labs, Ramkrishna Forge, Cyber Media, Unitech, Vishesh Info, Igarashi Motors, Finolex Pipes, Gammon India and Revathi Equipment were among the major mid-cap gainers.

Pritish Nandy Communications, RPG Cables, Dalmia Cement, Nitco Tiles, Ansal Infrastructure, IFB Agro, Garden Silk, Softpro Solutions, Williamson Magor and Uniphos Enterprises were among the other major mid-cap losers.

Mid-cap news flow

  • has acquired a domestic software developer with revenues of Rs8.4 crore last year. The acquired company focuses on payment services, back office exception processing and business process integration services, employing around 50 people. Cost of acquisition has not been disclosed.
  • The current promoters of would submit a reconstruction scheme to the RBI. The bank was placed under moratorium by the central government yesterday.
  • Jagran Prakashan would launch a new edition of its Hindi language daily Dainik Jagran from Amritsar.
  • JK Lakshmi Cement has restored normal operations at its plant in Rajasthan, which was affected by the recent floods.
  • The board of KEI Industries will meet early next week to consider a stock split. The board would also consider additional find raising through an overseas issue, QIP or issue of non-convertible debentures and commercial paper.
  • ABG Heavy Industries has been awarded the license to operate a mobile crane at the Mangalore port.
  • Shringar Cinemas has started commercial operations at a new movie theatre in Surat, under a management contract. The company's multiplex in Mumbai has received entertainment tax exemption.
  • has signed a strategic agreement with Borland India under which Borland would provide a host of services and access to technology.
  • Genus Overseas would issue 10 lakh convertible warrants to promoters and associates at a price of Rs199 per share.
  • Simplex Infrastructure has won orders worth Rs250 crore from the domestic market and Sri Lanka.
  • The board of Rain Commodities would meet next week to consider a merger of wholly owned subsidiary Rain Industries with the company.
  • Kamat Hotels has entered into a management contract to manage a small hotel near Goa.
  • Elecon Engineering has received an order worth Rs53 crore from JSW Steel.
  • The board of Ind-Swift Lab has approved the conversion of 3.5 lakh preference shares of Rs100 each into 3.5 lakh equity shares at a price of Rs92 per share.
