All the optimism built up after the Infosys results have completely vanished as weakness in global equity markets continue. The indices, which were trying to resist considerable falls last week and managed to outperform most global indices, finally came crumbling down.

Markets opened weak as expected, but most traders would have underestimated the possible extent of losses by the end of the day. Till early afternoon it was a gradual decline for the indices, but the afternoon fall was severe. The big heavyweights led the decline and there was no recovery from such a fall.

Sensex closed with losses of 385 points at 10293 and the Nifty lost 116 points to close at 3007. Nifty July futures ended at a discount of 24 points to the spot index.

The afternoon fall was led by heavyweight ONGC, on fears that rising crude oil prices would bring additional subsidy burden on the company. Though the company would benefit from high oil prices as a producer, subsidy sharing may in fact be higher than previous year. The stock finally ended more than 7 per cent lower.

Reliance Industries also faced some pressure and closed more than 3.5 per cent lower.

Auto stocks have been hard hit ever since crude oil started the current surge. Today was no exception as auto stocks were among the biggest losers in the afternoon. M&M lost 7 per cent, Tata Motors gave up 6 per cent and Maruti ended 5 per cent lower.

Suzlon Energy, one of the big outperformers in this pull back rally, crashed 10 per cent and closed below Rs1,000 once again. The stock was the biggest losers among index stocks.

Jet Airways slipped below Rs500 for the first time. The surge in oil prices and another round of price war in the industry are feared to dent the airline's profitability further. The stock lost more than 8 per cent today.

Among telecom stocks, Reliance Communications was the big losser. The stock really crumbled and lost nearly 8 per cent to close below Rs250. VSNL lost more than 4.5 per cent and MTNL declined 4 per cent.

HDFC continued its slide and lost another 5.5 per cent. SBI lost 4 per cent while HDFC Bank ended 3 per cent lower. ICICI Bank declined nearly 2 per cent.

Satyam was the biggest loser among tech stocks, closing nearly 5.5 per cent lower. Infosys lost 2.5 per cent while Wipro ended more than 2 per cent lower. TCS was trading firm till afternoon, but closed nearly a per cent lower.

Reliance Energy was another big loser among index stocks and closed nearly 6 per cent lower.

Dr. Reddy's was the worst performer among pharma stocks, closing nearly 6 per cent lower. Ranbaxy gave up 4.5 per cent.

Tata Power was the sole gainer among Nifty stocks, closing nearly a per cent higher.

Global markets / crude oil
Asian markets were weak following the continuing decline in US. Concerns over tension in the Middle East and record oil prices affected the sentiment today as well. Singapore was the biggest loser, closing more than 1.8 per cent lower. Indonesia declined more than 1.5 per cent while Thailand and Malaysia lost over 1.2 per cent each.

Shanghai was the lone gainer, closing more than a per cent higher. Japan and South Korea were closed today.

European markets are also weak today, but are doing much better than the Asian markets. Major indices are trading with losses of between 0.3 to a 0.6 per cent each.

After setting new all-time high of over $78 per barrel on Friday, crude oil prices have corrected today on profit booking by funds. Near month NYMEX futures is trading below $76 in European trades today.

Mid-caps and small caps resisted the decline in morning trades but gave up the fight by noon. Most of the stocks which had gained during the previous week came under profit booking and lost ground. Even then losses on the mid-cap and small-cap indices were lower than the frontline indices.

The CNX Mid-Cap index ended with losses of 93 points, or 2.39 per cent, to end the day at 3785. BSE mid-cap index lost 2.02 per cent and the BSE small cap index gave up 2.18 per cent.
