Google's Android software boosted its share of tablet computers almost 10-fold in the fourth quarter, which made up some of the lead enjoyed by Apple Inc's iPad.

According to research firm Strategy Analytics, in the three months to 31 December, Android devices made up 22 per cent of global tablet shipments that was up from 2.3 per cent in the preceding quarter, according to the Boston-based researcher's statement.

It added the iPad comprised 75 per cent of shipments during the period, which was down from around 95 per cent.

Since its introduction in April, the Apple iPad has sold more than 14.8 million units worldwide, but is now facing stiff competition from Android tablets made by Samsung Electronics Co, Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc and Acer Inc.

To boost its revenue Google gives away Android for free to target services such as mobile advertising and to expand the market for its search engine.

According to Neil Mawston, director at Strategy Analytics.
