China develops next generation internet technology news
25 September 2006
Mumbai: China has developed a faster, more secure and high capacity internet technology that could possibly end current US domination. An expert panel has cleared the new network called the China Education Network2 (CERNET 2) that will connect 25 universities in 20 cities across the country, the state media reported.

The panel comprising top scientists and researchers was set up by China's National Development and Research Commission (NDRC).

The new technology will support the IPv6 system and offer consumers a faster and more secure access, Chinese experts said. CERNET2 is providing cutting-edge technology for the "China next generation internet" (CNGI), the world's largest single internet protocol version 6 (IPv6) network, the China Daily reported.

IPv6 exponentially increases the number of possible internet protocol (IP) addresses available for connecting PCs and other devices to the internet as against the current IPv4, which could run dry as more and more people connect to the net.

The new protocol can transfer data at speeds of 2.5 gigabytes to 10 gigabytes per second, 100 times faster than current internet speeds, the report said.

Five Chinese telecom operators, including China Telecom and China Mobile, are currently building IPv6 networks while research institutes and manufacturers are working to standardise and commercialise IPv6 applications and hardware. Some of the networks are expected to begin trial runs by the end of the year.

While the US, Japan and South Korea are also building IPv6 technologies, which are expected to gain "significant global traction" by 2010, the new development is expected to make Chinese technology companies more competitive internationally.
