India tops in growth of internet users with 7.8 per cent rise in 3 months news

Mumbai: The total population of internet users in India aged over 15 years, rose 7.8 per cent to 18.02 million in June 2006 from 16.71 million in March 2006. The growth in India's online population far outstrips that of other countries, including big users like the US, China, Japan and Germany.

These are the findings of the latest survey by US-based technology research firm comScore Networks

India has also emerged as the ninth biggest country in terms of the total online population from its 10th position three months ago, while the US has retained its top slot with 153 million of web users.

China witnessed the second-biggest jump of 5.22 per cent, Russia witnessed 5.14 per cent growth, while online population of Japan, Korea, Canada and Brazil rose between 2-4 per cent.

The growth in the country's online audience size outpaced the global rate of 2.7 per, rising to 713 million in June from 694 million in March this year. The number of internet visitors rose less than one per cent in the US, Germany, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands, while the UK, France and Australia have actually registered a decline.

The figures exclude the traffic from public computers and access from new age tools like mobile phones or PDAs.
