Second security hole discovered in Excelnews
21 June 2006
Microsoft has said that it is investigating yet another security hole found in its Excel spreadsheet yesterday. The discovery makes it the second such discovery this week. Microsoft, through its Security Advisory 921365, appears to have advised users of Excel to avoid using the spread sheet.

The advisory points out the vulnerability associated with Microsoft Excel 2003, Excel Viewer 2003, Excel 2002, Excel 2000, Excel 2004 and a couple of versions for its rival the Macintosh. It says, "In order for the attack to be carried out, a user must first open a malicious Excel file attached to a e-mail or otherwise provider by the attacker."

Microsoft's stated "workarounds" for dealing with the unpleasant prospect of Excel documents bearing malware are: "prevent Excel documents from entering the corporate network directly, block all Excel types at the e-mail gateway."

The advisory also says: "Block the ability to open Excel documents from Outlook in attachments, web sites, and the file system" and "do not open or save Microsoft Excel files that you receive from un-trusted sources."
