Shanghai-Six moves to fend off internet threats news
19 June 2006
Mumbai: The six-nation Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), a grouping of six Asian countries led by Russia and China - popularly known as Shanghai-Six - is planning to set up an expert group to find ways of improving internet and computer security. The group's statement, issued after its annual summit in Shanghai, did not identify any specific threats or actions planned.

The statement said that web supervision of information and communication is causing "serious harm to individual, social and national security" of sovereign states, adding that criminals, terrorists and even nation states could use the technology to attack individual countries or even undermine global stability.

The statement, however, said the expert group, which will have representatives from its regional anti-terrorist squads, would suggest information security solutions and formulate action plans against possible threats.

While China has one of the world's tightest internet regulations, mainly on sensitive information, pornography and gambling, Russia is home to internet hackers and computer fraud.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation groups China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
